Newmarket is a city of 80,000 in the heart of Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe. Though as it grows, it gains the convenience of a large city, Newmarket remains true to its small-town spirit with a beautiful downtown core and dozens of ways to enjoy clean air and blue skies. Here are five of our favourites.
Newmarket is known for premiere stables and a thriving equine community, but those who want a family day out should look out just outside Newmarket in the town of Pefferlaw. Eaglewood Camp Ground boasts 98 acres of woods and trails with horses and instruction – perfect for groups, children or events. Just because they can’t have a pony for their birthday, doesn’t mean they can’t rent one!
Though trail rides are available, there are also paved trails for those with strollers or wagons. Eaglewood is great in the winter too – snowshoeing, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and more are less than an hour from your door if you call Newmarket home.
There are several wineries in the Newmarket area, but this is one of the most picturesque. Although they do large, catered events, weekend travellers can look forward to an hour-long tour and tasting of both red and white wines – and chocolate! Check this stunning location out on Facebook and Pintrest and it won’t be long until Holland Marsh is on your list.
Those with new families – or babysitting someone else’s for an afternoon – should love Kids at Sea. This family owned-and-operated playplace is great for kids from 6 months to three years. This place has tons of delighted parent reviews on Yelp and tripadvisor, too, which are no easy feat to come by. Also good for summer daycare or camp, parties, and “Drop-and-Go,” a service that allows you to drop them for a flat fee and run errands – or, you know, not run errands.
The Newmarket area is rich in agriculture, so their farmer’s market is one of the best. Organic produce is just the beginning: visitors can also find natural skincare, wagon rides, live music, crepes, oven-baked pizza, baked goods, flowers, and honey products among tons of other vendors. Bonus: this farmers market has both Jamaican patties and dim sum. Seriously. Come as a shopper or volunteer.
5. Brooks Farms
Also a vendor at the Newmarket Farmer’s Market, Brooks Farms is a fun and inexpensive family day out. This 100-year-old family establishment has something to please everyone: on-site produce market, do-it-yourself berry picking, 3 themed annual festivals (maple syrup, Easter and Halloween, so you can grab a pumpkin while you’re at it.
Their most impressive facet, though, is the ten-acre playland: zip lines, live animals, a corn maze, train rides, and tons of structures to jump, swing and climb on. All for $7.50 per person, free for kids under 2. Oh, and there’s a chip truck, because you’re going to get hungry.
