Celebrating Mother’s Day at Home

Making a Mother’s Day celebration memorable and unique doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. A family trip to somewhere exotic or renting out a local party room is nice but, ultimately, the day is about celebrating with family – wherever that may be. It could be as simple as heading to your favourite local ice cream shop and sharing an ice cream sundae or staying at home and enjoying family time. Here are 5 tips to help you have a wonderful Mother’s Day at Home!

Mother's Day at Home

1) Breakfast in Bed

Waking mom up to a wonderfully thoughtful breakfast in bed is a classic move when it comes to Mother’s Day celebrations. Not only does Mom get to sleep in a little bit longer but the kid’s get to be involved in the cooking. Believe us, watching those smiles as she bites into the Mother’s Day pancakes will melt your heart. Want to try something different? 2) Pampering

This could be the best gift of all. Encourage everyone to pitch in and let the moms in your life sit back and relax. They deserve it! Make sure they get the time they need to really let themselves unwind. We suggest having the spouse and kids make up coupons with services to be redeemed throughout Mother’s Day weekend. These could include:

– An hour alone to call a friend or soak in the tub

– A chance to sleep in until 9 a.m.

– A manicure at Mom’s favourite nail salon

– No sibling squabbles for an hour

3) Creative Flowers

If you have some extra space in your garden, you can create a real, live Mother’s Day canvas. Prepare in advance by purchasing various packets of flower seeds that grow fast and well in your region. Have your kids draw a picture or write a short message (such as “We love Mom”) in the garden dirt with a stick. Drop the flower seeds into the dirt lines; then cover them up, and water every few days. Before long, your picture/ message will be blooming, and you’ll have a Mother’s Day gift that keeps on growing.

4) Arts and Crafts

These kinds of activities are a wonderful way to see how creative your children really are. Watching them excitedly perform or make something for mom is an absolutely adorable experience! Start a new tradition this year by creating a family comic strip. Think of an event, celebration, or something funny that happened this past year, and illustrate it with markers, crayons, or paints. Make sure to save your comic strip, and create another one next year and others in years to come.

If it’s a warm day, go outside and have your children place their hands and feet into nontoxic paint before pressing them into a roll of butcher paper. Label each hand and footprint with the person’s name, the date, and special message to Mom. If  you try it again next year you get to see how much bigger some hands and feet have become!

On of our personal favourites is staging a “lip-synch” family contest. Have each family member choose a favourite song, turn on the music, and let each person lip-synch the words, doing his or her best to mimic the performer. Other family members can rate the performance from one (not at all like the performer) to five (totally like the performer), and write down their score on a card. The person with the highest score wins the contest.

5) Family Get-Together

To finish off the day gather all the grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles and other ‘mom’ family members together for a joint celebration! Being able to celebrate with family is a great way to connect with the spirit of honouring mothers and all they do year round. If the weather is nice, a barbeque is the perfect venue for a laidback family-focused party.

We hope this list helps you to come up with some ideas for a memorable celebration at home with you and your family. From all of us at Mosaik Homes, Happy Mother’s Day!
